FARC dissidents behind a drone strike in rural Cauca

Colombia’s Ministry of Defense have attributed Tuesday’s (27th) drone attack in El Plateado to the Carlos Patiño substructure of the Estado Mayor Central, FARC dissidents led by Iván Mordisco.

The small town in central Cauca was terrorised by an improvised-explosives drone strike that killed one person and left 11+ more injured.

According to the Colombian Ministry of Defense, Carlos Patiño targeted a group of farmers because after the community failed to show up in full force to eject the police from the town.

Just a week ago, a car bomb went off in the same town near a school, thankfully harming no one.

El Plateado had long been under the control of the EMC. It’s strategically important because of its location in a mature coca producing region and its transport connections to Nariño, the Pacific coast, and inland Cauca.

The community has been burdened by frequent attacks since the government attempted to force the Carlos Patiño out by entering the town in force, an effort dubbed Operation Perseus.

In September, a group of 45 soldiers were detained in the nearby municipality of El Tambo for 24 hours by the local population, possibly at the behest of the Carlos Patiño dissidents. A few months prior, in June, 57 soldiers were held hostage under similar circumstances.
